OSTEOPATHY
Relieve pain and get to the root cause of your problem
What is Osteopathy?
.........................................................
Osteopathy embraces a holistic approach, incorporating body, mind and spirit. It strives to move towards optimal patient health. Osteopaths work by incorporating a structure and function approach. This is achieved by the body working together as a whole. (General Osteopathic Council, 2015).
Osteopaths use a variety of techniques such as manipulation, stretching and massage. This is to increase blood and nerve supply to the tissues, increase joint range of motion, relieve muscle tension, plus boost the body’s self-healing mechanisms. They may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring. (GOsC, 2015)

Osteopathy is becoming more widely recognised by the medical profession. The NICE guidelines (NICE, 2009) state that it is a beneficial treatment for low back pain. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the British Medical Association (BMA) also acknowledge it is an effective treatment of choice. (BMA, 2000; WHO, 2010;)

Western medical acupuncture
..............................................
Western medical acupuncture is a derivative of Chinese acupuncture involving the insertion of fine needles. Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in skin and muscle, and can produce a variety of effects. It increases the body's release of natural painkillers - endorphin and serotonin - in the pain pathways of both the spinal cord and the brain. This modifies the way pain signals are received. (British Medical Acupuncture Society, 2010).
Gemma incorporates Western Medical Acupuncture within Osteopathic Treatments, especially for myofascial trigger point pain and headaches. Your consent will always be gained before using acupuncture. It is not a problem if you don’t want it as part of your treatment plan.

WHAT TO EXPECT
During your first visit you will be asked lots of questions! This is so we can gain as much information about you and your symptoms so to aid our diagnosis and treatment plan.
Undressing
During your first visit you will be asked lots of questions! This is so we can gain as much information about you and your symptoms so to aid our diagnosis and treatment plan.
Evaluation
This will involve us assessing your posture and movement both standing and lying on the treatment table. Depending on how complex the problem is, you will be treated at the first appointment, however this may be minimal. The objective of the first appointment is to provide a diagnosis, what has contributed and what is possibly maintaining the problem. This is vital in order to provide treatment that is tailored to your needs.
Treatment Plan
We will discuss with you the most appropriate treatment plan, estimating the likely number of sessions needed to treat your condition effectively. If we think that your condition is unlikely to respond to osteopathic treatment, you will be advised about how to seek further care. Osteopaths are skilled in diagnostic techniques and trained to identify when a patient needs to be referred to a GP.
